Here I sit with quill in hand and inks of many colours at the ready. The parchment has been well scraped and is smooth and dry. I have in mind to recount a long history, though one worth the telling. I pray that the task that lay before me shall be brought to its fulfillment, and that it may be read and listened to in days to come.

In the name of God Almighty, I, Ambrose, mystrell, poet, and comrade-in-arms to King Richard the Lion Heart, shall here set down this tale of the Great Pilgrimage to the Holy Land, and relate only what I myself truly saw and heard.

I begin without further ado and go straight to the heart of the tale.
